A strategy usually fails in the gap between the person who decided it and the person who has to make it real. The decider holds the context; the maker holds the deadline. The brief is the bridge.
The brief that travels
A brief that survives the handoff answers five questions on one page.
- What are we making and for whom
- What should it achieve, in one measurable line
- What must it say, in priority order
- What must it not do
- When is it due and who approves it
Close the loop
After delivery, compare the work with the brief, not with taste. If the work missed the brief, fix the brief or the work. If the brief was wrong, fix the strategy. Either way, write it down.
